IT Welcome to Darry
I am so burned by Alien Earth and some of the choices there that my expectations here were rock bottom. I knew to keep them there, even though all the critics said how incredible this show is. I’m not falling for that again.
But lucky me — the first episode delivered.
I can’t believe they killed those kids. I really liked them, and I even connected with the one with the lamp. I don’t remember their names, but Pennywise just tore them to pieces. He also got his best friend — annoying but relatable — and his cute sister who never knew what was going on. And now she’ll never figure it out. Pennywise left only one of her hands ✋️.
After the start of the show, I wasn’t sure if I would like it. I mean, controlling a whole family? But after I saw the mother giving birth, I felt 🙃 like I might actually enjoy this. And then you see the birth of the creature Pennywise used (he’s like an incredible Pokémon trainer: ugly mutant baby, I choose you!). It’s like you’re right in front of her shredded vagina with that thing tearing out — pure horror.
I guess in the movies he created multiple hallucinations at once, so I’ll allow it, but I always prefer him when he’s on screen or at least one clear entity. Here, he chose that mutated Pokémon and ate those kids. I love the show already — it’s so cozy and comfy, just the perfect TV for the spooky season.
Those demon hunter costumes that are number one right now could have some healthy competition with Pennywise.
The show just works well making the kids relatable and cool. The big brother coming into the room saying 'I can't believe we are related', just captures half of my childhood. The fart joke in the toilet, absolute stinker.
“You’re not the only person who’s had something horrible happen to them. The sooner you realize that, the better.”
When the mother said that, my first response was: wow, how horrible it is to compare people’s pain. Perspective helps, yes, but it shouldn’t come forcefully. You have to go through the whole process at your own natural pace. The way she said it just dismissed her daughter’s entire process of dealing with her loss.
After a while, I thought about the positive opportunities that can come from seeing different perspectives — but in the context of the show and the struggle this girl was going through, the mother felt like an extension of Pennywise’s power, like most of the adults in the last two chapters.
I can’t wait to see how The Mist and other Stephen King fantasies are included and adapted here. This show really feels like part of the two movies. The first one — with the exception of a couple visuals — is one of my favorites. They dropped the ball on the second one, but the story still has a place in my heart.
The books — I’ve read them twice. Once as a child (huge mistake) and once a couple of years ago (huge mistake). King just knows how to play with your imagination. He often relies on that. So many of his projects fail because someone tries to explain them to us and ruins everything in the process. His vision actually 🔥 fires up our imaginations — our minds do the rest of the work. That’s why it’s so hard to adapt him. So many different iterations of his mind-boggling concepts. Most of them don’t work on screen because they’re wild. But somehow It does.
That crazy force that took the form of a clown — a shapeshifting creature that feeds on fear — it works. Do you get what I mean? This show captures that, and the budget delivers.
The cast delivers outstanding performances — raw, believable, and perfectly tuned to the unsettling tone of the story.
Oh man, I hate that they killed those kids, but at the same time, that massacre was needed — and it hooked me for the weeks ahead.
We’ve got 7 episodes ahead until it ends on 14 December:
-
Ep. 2 → 3.11
-
Ep. 3 → 10.11
-
Ep. 4 → 17.11
-
Ep. 5 → 23.11
-
Ep. 6 → 30.11
-
Ep. 7 → 7.12
-
Ep. 8 → 14.12
The show already has a lot of buzz for the next season, which will take place 27 years earlier — an incredible idea. More for me! Can’t wait to see what’s about to hit us. I just hope it doesn’t fall on its back like Alien Earth. I’m still burned by that episode 5 — the bad acting, the ridiculous costume, and that laughable scenario. So I’ll keep my expectations low — that way, I can only be surprised in a good way.
