Pharaohs' Golden Parade: How Music Unlocks the Secrets of Culture

The other day, I was lucky to experience another part of a culture so beautiful and new to me that I had to write about it. On April 3, 2021, in Cairo, Egypt, twenty-two mummies of New Kingdom Kings and Queens from Ancient Egypt were transported from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, with an incredible celebration and honor that you can only witness in Egypt.

When I thought about Egypt, I never imagined this level of sophistication, richness, and order. I must admit my views of the world are quite basic, and to broaden them, you need to see more cultures, meet more people, and experience their universe. I have a friend from Egypt, and while we were hanging out, he showed me this parade to familiarize me with the luxury his country offers. I was amazed the entire time, primarily by the music. The Pharaohs' Golden Parade featured one of the most beautiful concerts I have ever witnessed. Rich in ancient and modern culture, it seamlessly combined both throughout the event, which included a performance by the Egyptian United Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by maestro Nader Abbassi and accompanied by compositions from Egyptian composer Hesham Nazih. The production design was crafted by Mohamed Attia, with direction by Ahmad al Morsy. The concert showcased Ancient Egyptian chants performed by soprano Amira Selim. Her rendition of the hymn "A Reverence for Isis" was based on inscriptions from the Deir el-Shelwit temple in Luxor. Additionally, other Ancient Egyptian lyrics sung during the parade were derived from the Book of the Dead and the Pyramid Texts. Reham Abdel Hakim and Nesma Mahgoub contributed two songs in Classical Arabic and Egyptian Arabic, respectively.

I often say that one of the keys to understanding a culture is its music, and I love classical music, but hearing it mixed with ancient Egyptian elements as well as Arabic is a whole new level of experience. The three singers featured in the parade delivered one of the most special performances I have ever heard in ancient Egyptian music. The hymn "A Reverence for Isis" is a powerful anthem that needs to be heard. You will be transported by the classical performance of Amira Selim. Her voice echoed with the sound of the orchestra and you can hear their talent here. The Egyptian United Philharmonic Orchestra is truly exceptional; I have never heard music quite like this. I love that by the end of the ceremony, my friend couldn’t hide his surprise and turned to me, asking, “Why are you not impressed?” I will carry this question with me forever; it was so amusing to be asked that. At the same time, I was amazed and thinking about how music unlocks the secrets of culture.

في اليومين اللي فاتوا، كنت محظوظ إني شفت جزء تاني من ثقافة جميلة وجديدة عليا لدرجة إني لازم أكتب عنها. في 3 أبريل 2021، في القاهرة، مصر، اتنقلت 22 مومياء لملوك وملكات من المملكة الحديثة في مصر القديمة من المتحف المصري في ميدان التحرير إلى المتحف الوطني للحضارة المصرية في الفسطاط، مع احتفال رائع وتكريم ما تقدرش تشوفه إلا في مصر.

لما كنت بفكر في مصر، ما كنتش أتخيل مستوى الرقي والغنى والنظام اللي شفته. لازم أعترف إن نظرتي للعالم كانت بسيطة، ولتوسيعها لازم تشوف ثقافات تانية، وتقابل ناس جديدة، وتعيش تجارب مختلفة. عندي صديق من مصر، ولما كنا بنتكلم، ورّاني العرض ده علشان يتعرفني على الفخامة اللي بتقدمها بلده. كنت مندهش طول الوقت، وبالأخص بالموسيقى. عرض الفراعنة الذهبي كان فيه واحد من أجمل الحفلات الموسيقية اللي شفتها. كان مليان بالثقافة القديمة والحديثة، ودمج بينهم بشكل رائع خلال الحدث، اللي شمل أداء من الأوركسترا الفيلهارمونية المصرية، بقيادة المايسترو نادر عباسي، مع مقطوعات من المؤلف المصري هشام نزيه. تصميم الإنتاج كان من تنفيذ محمد عطيه، والإخراج كان من أحمد المرسي. الحفل عرض أناشيد مصرية قديمة غنتها السوبرانو أميرة سليم. أداؤها لنشيد "تكريم لإيزيس" كان مستند على نقوش من معبد دير الشلويت في الأقصر. كمان، كلمات أخرى من الأناشيد المصرية القديمة اللي غنت في العرض جت من كتاب الموتى ونصوص الأهرامات. ريهام عبد الحكيم ونسمة محجوب قدموا أغنيتين بالعربية الفصحى والعربية المصرية على التوالي.

أقول دائمًا أن أحد مفاتيح فهم الثقافة هو الموسيقى، وأنا أحب الموسيقى الكلاسيكية، لكن سماعها ممزوجة بعناصر من مصر القديمة وأيضًا بالعربية هو تجربة جديدة تمامًا. الثلاثة مغنيين الذين كانوا في العرض قدموا أحد أروع العروض التي سمعتها في الموسيقى المصرية القديمة. النشيد "تكريم لإيزيس" هو نشيد قوي يجب أن يُسمع. ستُنتقل عبر الأداء الكلاسيكي لأميرة سليم، حيث ينسجم صوتها مع صوت الأوركسترا. يمكنك الاستماع إلى الحفل على يوتيوب أو سبوتيفاي. أوصي بشدة بمشاهدة العرض بنفسك لتقدير غنى هذه الثقافة والتقدير الذي يشعرون به تجاهها.

أحببت أنه في نهاية الاحتفال، لم يستطع صديقي إخفاء دهشته ودار إليّ قائلاً: "لماذا لا تبدو مندهشًا؟" سأظل أحتفظ بهذا السؤال معي إلى الأبد؛ فقد كان من الممتع حقًا أن يُطرح عليّ. في الوقت نفسه، كنت مندهشًا وأفكر في كيفية أن الموسيقى تكشف أسرار الثقافة.
