A24
A24 studio was founded in 2012 by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges. Since then, the studio has brought us various movies that are considered outside the box. That move is often seen as innovative and bold when it comes to movie making. A24 is a groundbreaking studio, quickly breaking the Hollywood norm, not scared to jiggle with more weird and original ideas as an innovative newborn brand. Some ideas fail at the box office, some are hits, but one thing is sure: A24 delivers incredible original content that is like a breath of fresh air in this polluted-with-mediocrity region that is Hollywood.
I am committed to following the destiny of the brand and to make sure that I see and review most of their upcoming movies, as well as revisit some of their older projects like 'Hereditary,' 'Midsommar,' 'X,' 'Pearl,' 'Men,' 'Lamb,' 'Ex Machina,' and much more. You can already find reviews of 'Talk to me,' 'The Whale,' and 'Beau is Afraid' on my blog; the link is down below. Here, I will also explore what I am looking forward to seeing from the studio as well as what played this year in theaters. There are some pretty exciting movies that I have missed this year, and I'll quickly recover from that loss.
Let's begin with the most popular title of the last couple of weeks, currently playing in cinemas - 'The Iron Claw' with Zac Efron. Good for Efron that he reinvents himself with such an outside-of-his-box movie. Crossing into the drama lane may be the thing that works best for him. From what I've heard, the movie is good, delivers, but it is extremely sad, and Efron does a very good job portraying Kevin Von Erich, a character that I've never heard of, but I am eager to discover.
The next movie that I am looking forward to seeing is 'Past Lives,' directed by Celine Song, starring Greta Lee, whom I came to love after two seasons of 'The Morning Show.' This film has serious Oscar buzz around it, and as soon as I find a platform to stream it from, I will.
The other day I saw the trailer of 'Love Lies Bleeding' with Bella Swan, no, I am kidding, but Kristen Stewart may be playing the Efron trick and reinventing herself with the studio. A24 is allowing talent to try different roles than usual, bringing together star talent with unpredictable storytelling.
The brand by now has an effect on me because whenever I see the logo, I am eager to check it out. Even though most of the stuff I will stream at home, I am still committed to spreading the word if a movie is a must-watch. 'Civil War' seems like a cool action dystopian feature that I am about to watch, and it comes this spring.
It seems like another monumental project of A24 is a film by Steve McQueen called 'Occupied City.' This documentary will explore connections between the known past and the scary present. 'Occupied City' came in a limited release this Christmas.
Another film that has my new favorite upcoming actress / already here, Greta Lee, distributed by A24, is 'Problemista.' This is the story of Alejandro, and it is a funny take on the American promise. The presence of Tilda Swinton here is unbelievable, and the main actor that plays Alejandro, Julio Torres, seems like an another upcoming movie star. The comedy came out this year, and it has a decent score, yet to be seen and reviewed by me.
How does it feel to go viral? We will see in the movie 'Dream Scenario,' starring Nicholas Cage, where he apparently appears in the dreams of many people, becoming a huge viral sensation, quickly escalating from comedy to horror. The special ingredient of A24: Weird on steroids. Another decent score that I am looking forward to visiting.
'MaXXXine' is the final chapter of the Ti West trilogy that made Mia Goth a horror movie star and fan favorite around the world. Her willingness to put herself out there with her performance, as well as the weirdness and the aesthetic of these movies, are what makes this third installment something I am looking forward to this year.
In this big studio war that feels like Godzilla vs. Kong, where original ideas die due to the cult of big IPs, studios like A24 feel new, fresh, and exciting. Even though not all films stick, the willingness to go there and to experiment with different genres and mix between them is creating a strong brand that could take some punches as well as punch hard.
